It looks like the original Candyman will appear in the new one after all.

Last year came word that filmmaker Jordan Peele is set to produce a refresh of 1992 cult horror franchise “Candyman” for MGM and Universal Pictures.

That original, an adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden,” starred Virginia Madsen as a graduate student who explores the legend of Candyman (Tony Todd) while writing a thesis on urban legends.

The new film has been dubbed a ‘spiritual sequel’ to the original and returns to the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

However there has been some confusion as to who is playing the Candyman himself in the film. We do know Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play an artist who becomes obsessed with the bloody legend, Teyonah Parris is his art dealer girlfriend.

The other week, appearing at Nickel City Con in New York, Todd disclosed he has a role in the upcoming film in what sounds like a cameo honoring the original. He says:

“Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”
